Monroe students scare up food aid

More than 40 Monroe High School students spread out across the city on Halloween night for a “We Scare Hunger” food drive that brought in 1,385 pounds of food for the Sky Valley Food Bank.

The event was organized by students Karen Vasatka and Alyson Gonzalez by splitting up neighborhoods into sections to make sure as much area as possible was covered.

We Scare Hunger is an initiative by the Free the Children program to help inspire kids to foster change locally and to serve their communities.

Park Place Middle School also held a We Scare Hunger food drive and collected 198 pounds for the food bank.

Everett teen’s film selected for festival

A humorous short film by Cascade High School student Adam McArthur was recently selected for “Fresh Film NW,” a showcase of young filmmakers’ work.

The program is one of the oldest and largest youth film festivals in the nation.

McArthur’s “Showdown At High Noon” — a Creative Expression Award winner — will be screened Nov. 16 at the Whitsell Auditorium at the Portland Art Museum. In the seven-minute film, a local sheriff faces a bank robber and discovers something besides stolen gold.

The youth showcase is part of the larger Northwest Filmmakers’ Festival.

Mariner Harvest Fest a success

Mariner High School’s Harvest Fest, an indoor event on Halloween night geared at younger children, saw nearly 1,500 people this year.

The National Honor Society held a canned food drive to benefit the Everett Food Bank at the event and brought in $87 and more than 11,000 cans of food.

Granite Falls recognizes students

The Granite Falls School District has announced its first-quarter Success in Education Awards, presented quarterly to students who show an understanding of the importance of education and provide service to other students, staff, or the community.

Granite Falls High School student winners were seniors Aakash Sethi and Syrena West. Middle school winners were Reece Cory (sixth grade), Valerie Lange (seventh grade) and Michaela Heuslein (eighth grade). Crossroads High School winners were Hunter Emborg and Anja Soldwedel.

The winners will be receive certificates and a plaque at the Nov. 20 school board meeting.

Meadowdale school gets high marks

The Council of Educational Facility Planners International selected Meadowdale Middle School as a 2013 James D. MacConnell Award Finalist for Educational Facility Project Excellence.

Integrus Architecture presented the finalist plaque to the Edmonds School Board at its Oct. 29 meeting.

In years past, both Edmonds-Woodway and Lynnwood high schools have won the James D. MacConnell Award.

County students headed to All-State

Student musicians and singers from several Snohomish County high schools and middle schools have been invited to participate in the Washington Music Educators Association’s All-State honor groups, performing concerts Feb. 15 in Yakima.
