Lynnwood Rotary creates kindergarten kits
Lynnwood Rotarians worked in August to assemble beans, flashcards, pencils with special grips and other supplies for kindergarten students who will be attending school in the Edmonds School District starting this week as part of the WaKIDS program.
The kits were to be distributed between the 10 elementary schools participating in the WaKIDS program: Beverly, Chase Lake, College Place, Cedar Valley, Lynndale, Lynnwood, Meadowdale, Mountlake Terrace, Oak Heights and Spruce.
WaKIDS (Washington Kindergarten Inventory of Developing Skills) is a state program that helps young children transition to kindergarten.
A nod for UW Bothell

Marysville teen crafts music for winning video
Jameson Gerdon, a Running Start student from Marysville, was the music producer on a satirical music video, “The Bad Rabbit Rap,” which recently won the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Ohio Valley Chapter’s Student Production Award for best music video by high-schoolers.
Brothers Jonathan and Jeremy Schaefer of Bowling Green High School in Kentucky headed up the project and were the recipients of the award. Gerdon, 17, worked with them remotely to put music to their concept of bunnies gone bad.
“I actually engineered via Google video hangouts with them to make sure that the mic placement was good and that we were getting the best possible recordings,” Gerdon said. “Once I received the vocal tracks I mixed and mastered the track and we kept tweaking things until they were perfect.”
The video was posted to YouTube in April. In May, it also won the Western Kentucky University High School Film Festival’s best high school music video award.
Gerdon is entering his senior year and attends Shoreline Community College’s digital audio engineering program. He is on track to earn both his high school diploma and associate’s degree in the spring.

School staff help with Operation School Bell
The job of checking inventory, counting and labeling more than 90,000 items of new clothing is a massive task. That’s what Assistance League of Everett volunteers are doing, preparing to distribute new school clothes to children and teens in need, through Operation School Bell. Recently they received a helping hand from Everett School District staff who donated their evenings to label thousands of new jeans.
“Last school year, over a thousand students from Everett School District were given a new school wardrobe through School Bell,” said Donna Day, president of Assistance League of Everett. “We are very appreciative of the school staff volunteering. They see the positive impact new clothes have on their students and wanted to help out.”
