Local students sing with Chorus
Many local children had the honor of singing with the Seattle Children’s Chorus this past season, including performances on the stage at Benaroya Hall in Seattle. Students had to audition to be part of the Chorus.
Caleb Geer, one of three students to participate from Fryelands Elementary School in Monroe, said being in the Chorus helped him further develop his love of singing. “I was probably singing in my mom’s tummy,” Caleb said.

Snohomish undergrad receives dairy scholarship
Shannon Rodeffer, of Snohomish, was one of four inaugural recipients nationwide of a National Dairy Shrine Sophomore Merit Scholarship. Rodeffer’s scholarship was for $1,000. The scholarship is awarded to a sophomore undergraduate interested in a dairy career.
Rodeffer attends Iowa State University and majors in dairy science and business. In spring 2014, she studied abroad at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, and has also visited the Netherlands. She hopes to take a role in business management or analysis with an international dairy company or the USDA.
Monroe science teachers to work on STEM lessons
Two Monroe School District science teachers will be part of the STEM Fellows Program created by the Washington Alliance for Better Schools.
Tamara Haberlack, a seventh-grade teacher at Hidden River Middle School, and Nick Wolfe, a ninth-grade teacher at Monroe High School, will be working on a team with other teachers, higher education fellows and industry representatives to develop hands-on learning activities for their students.
Wolfe has been teaching physical science at Monroe High for five years. “I love to see students that think that they’re not ‘science students’ get really surprised when they love an activity and get what’s going on and understand the concepts,” he said.
Edmonds CC highlighted in national report
Edmonds Community College is highlighted for its strategies to combat student loan defaults in a national study released July 22.
The study, “Protecting Colleges and Students: Community College Strategies to Prevent Default,” focuses on nine community colleges representing different geographic locations, student-body sizes, and academic offerings. It examines predictors of loan default and strategies colleges use to prevent it.
Edmonds was highlighted for its use of “gatekeeper” courses, which embed financial literacy into curriculum, among other strategies. The report advised the college to also analyze and reach out to students who leave before completing a credential, among other steps. Read more at www.acct.org.
