Marching band, color guard place first in state
The Cascade High School Cascade Sound marching band and color guard held their final show Nov. 5 at the Auburn High School Veterans Day Marching Band Championships and took first place.
The school earned best music, best marching, best general effect and best color guard honors.
Earlier in the day, they were among about 30 school bands to march in the rain for a Veterans Day parade.
“I am so proud of our students. They performed their best show of the year,” said Mark Staley, director of wind bands, percussion and jazz studies at Cascade High School.
Green Team puts thumbs to work
The Henry M. Jackson High School Green Team planted a large sustainable landscape on Oct. 13 at the back of the school.
The garden was a student-led project to beautify the Mill Creek campus while also protecting water quality. The planting restored an area that used to be compacted, barren soil. Snohomish Conservation District and the city of Mill Creek assisted with the project.
By planting this garden, the school becomes a Mill Creek Certified Sustainable Landscape. The effort serves as a public demonstration garden to encourage other city residents to consider native landscaping in place of water-hungry lawns.
Students sock it away for Socktober
Cascade View Elementary School in Snohomish recently finished its second annual Socktober drive. Students helped collect 1,087 pairs of socks.
Most of the socks went to the Snohomish Community Food Bank to distribute through its Cold Weather Shelter, teen homelessness and other programs this winter. Other pairs were donated to the Everett Gospel Mission women’s and children’s shelter.
