Screaming Maple Valley girl, 5, escapes from man

MAPLE VALLEY — A King County sheriff’s spokeswoman says 5-year-old girl who kicked and screamed was able to get away from a young man who picked her up while she was at a Maple Valley apartment complex playground.

Sgt. Cindi West says witnesses told Maple Valley police that the girl and a 4-year-old boy were playing on swings Wednesday evening when the man approached, talked to the children and picked up the girl.

They say the man put her down when she kicked, screamed and hit him.

West says one witness grabbed the boy to protect him and another witness confronted the man.

Police arrested a 21-year-old Maple Valley man a short distance away and booked him into jail for investigation of unlawful imprisonment.

Maple Valley is southeast of Seattle.
