SEATTLE — The Seattle water taxi resumed service on its Elliott Bay route late Friday morning using a replacement for a boat undergoing repair for an electrical problem.
King County Transportation spokesman Jeff Switzer says it expects to complete scheduled sailings the rest of the day on the Elliott Bay and Vashon Island routes.
The 77-foot Rachel Marie was pulling out of the West Seattle dock at 7:15 a.m. for a 10-minute run to the downtown Seattle waterfront when smoke came from an engine compartment. The catamaran returned to the dock and about two dozen passengers were safely evacuated.
There was a large response from the Seattle Fire Department because of the reported boat fire. But spokesman Kyle Moore says there was no fire, just smoke from wires touching a generator.
