EVERETT — A main route along Everett’s waterfront will be blocked off for about 12 hours Saturday, so contractors can tear down a footbridge at the site of the former Kimberly-Clark tissue plant.
Crews plan to close West Marine View Drive between Everett Avenue and the entrance to the Naval Station on 19th Street from 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. for the project.
The bridge is one of the lingering artifacts of Everett’s mill town history, but new owners at the pulp mill site asked to have it taken down as a condition of its sale, according to the state Department of Transportation.
The Kimberly-Clark mill shut down in 2012. Over the following years, sales stalled out due to disagreements over who had to clean up the 66 acres of polluted land.
