SEDRO-WOOLLEY — North Cascades National Park is closing a campground for at least two weeks to discourage a bear that got what was described as “a substantial food reward” when it broke into a garbage can.
Park spokesman Ken Hires said Tumwater Campground on the upper Stehekin Valley Road was closed Tuesday and will stay closed until at least July 3. The bear dined on the garbage Monday.
The spokesman said a camp closure of two to three weeks is usually enough to persuade bears to move on.
The nearby High Bridge Campground will be monitored frequently as well, just in case the bear decides to try its luck there.
