50 years ago (1964)
George D. Bartch, a Seattle native who had been manader of the Port of Hood River, Ore. the past seven years, was named manager of the Port of Everett effective Sept. 1. Paul Kinnune, president of the Port, said that Bartch succeeded Tom McCuthcan, who after eight years was taking a position with the Port of Seattle.
Gillnetters Zene Hatch and sons Zane, Arnold and Dexter netted a 3,000-pound killer whale about 5 this morning off Mission Bar, Totem Beach. The 16-foot monster rolled out of the net and started to go under a dock as they entered port, but was shot twice with a .44 magnum.
25 years ago (1989)
Greenpeace launched a successful predawn assault on Weyerhaeuser’s kraft mill yesterday so it could unfurl a prize polluter award banner 150 feet up the smokestack just in time for rush hour traffic. Television crews soon followed.
The city of Snohomish stepped up its current residential recycling efforts with a new voluntary curbside program for an estimated 1,500 households. The city council authorized city manager Kelly Robinson to sign an agreement with Healy Services of Monroe, which would provide weekly pick-up services.
