50 years ago (1964)
Denise Lyons, 10, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Lyons, 6509 Commercial Ave., was the national winner of Young Hobby Club’s carrot puzzle contest. Her prize was a 12-volume set of Encyclopedia Britannica’s “Great Books for Children.” She was entering fifth grade at Roosevelt School.
Zion Lutheran School, Fourth and Union Street, Snohomish was beginning the school year with two new teachers, according to Raymond Knauft, principal. They were husband-wife team Wilfred and Judy Nitz, recent graduates of Concordia Teachers College in River Forest, Ill.
25 years ago (1989)
This Monday’s Herald would be delivered in the morning. Starting with Labor Day, the newspaper would be published in the morning seven holidays during the year. Publisher Larry Hanson said he was pleased to respond to readers interested in receiving a morning paper on the holidays.
Construction crews were putting in overtime to finish Mukilteo’s new Columbia Elementary School in time for the start of school. Principal Jon Evavold kept a black book and pencil by his bed at night to trap fleeting thoughts about such things as textbooks, tables and classroom flags.
