50 years ago (1963)
Today was the last day of this season’s Evergreen State Fair. Tomorrow was the first day of school for most schools. Demonstrating how the school patrol would be crossing students at Federal Ave. were Jackson sixth graders Susan Knehr and Howard McDannald, both outfitted in bright orange helmets and jackets.
With their cross-town football opener less than two weeks away, the Everett and Cascade squads buckled to work at their initial turnout. Talking practice plans were Everett head coach with co-captains Mike Price and Mike Goodwill, and Cascade head coach Pinky Erickson and co-captains Len Showlund and Dick DesJardien.
25 years ago (1988)
The story of county agriculture earned the state fair’s commission’s special outstanding exhibit black and white rosette award at the state fair. Commissioner Chevy Chase of Sunnyside said he couldn’t find anything wrong with the display. The exhibit was chaired by Ellen Dodge.
Traditional Indian dancing, plus singing and drumming competitions and a salmon barbecue, were all part of a three-day powwow at the Tulalip Reservation. Organizer Ray Fryberg said he expected about 3,000 Indian dancers in traditional costumes to participate.
