50 years ago (1963)
Army Pfc. Richard French, son of Mrs. Evelyn French, 2132 Baker Ave., on duty in Germany with the 504th Administration Company, was assigned to Co. A 2nd Battalion, 37th Armored Division as a member of the U.S. army basketball team. French was a 1962 Everett High School graduate and a starter on the school’s basketball team.
Going over lines for the forthcoming production of “Reign Around Elizabeth,” the annual senior play at Lakes Stevens High School, were Cheryl Provazek, David Strom, Sally Solem and Clif Stine. Student directors were Marilyn Rux and Nancy Wickham.
25 years ago (1988)
David Somers of Monroe, a fisheries biologist for the Tulalip Tribes, had been selected to participate in a two-year leadership development program under the auspices of the Washington Agriculture and Forestry Education Foundation based in Spokane.
Shipping’s worldwide signal of distress, SOS in Morse code would be phased out by 1990, the International Maritime Organization announced. After that all ships would have to use the satellite-linked Global Maritime Distress and Safety System.
