50 years ago (1963)
Esther McChesney was the principal speaker at the Exchange Club’s Boy and Girl of the Month luncheon. Those honored were Nancy Schwartz, Everett High; Louis Stevenson, Cascade High; Susan Forrest, Evergreen Junior; and John Hawkinson, Olympic View Junior.
United Good Neighbors agencies, staff and campaign leaders said thanks to the hundreds of organizations and individuals that made this year’s drive a success. Spelling out thanks were Brad Lewis, Linda Campbell, Gene Doeneka, Jane Burton, Jeff Ferwerda and Darlene Woods.
25 years ago (1988)
The Herald contained an editorial lauding Snohomish County’s new open spaces preservation fund. The paper thought it was a farsighted venture that was good for local citizens to protect the area’s unique quality of life. Growth was going wild and it was essential to save open spaces from the encroaching asphalt.
Charles Leicester greeted Amtrak’s Empire Builder at the Everett depot this morning just as he had every morning and evening for the past 4½ years. The 83-year-old said he was just a train buff and liked to talk to the crews. He said the engineer always tooted his whistle when passing by.
