50 years ago (1963)
Tom Gill, Fairmount School’s fifth grade teacher, looked on as four of his pupils prepared posters to use Halloween night when they went trick-or-treating for UNICEF. The students were Althea Gibson, Jane Hiet, Pat Shaw and Doug Harris.
Picking up where others left off — and a generation or so after they did — Clement J. Fitzgerald, Route 1 in Marysville, was busy making and selling cider presses. Fitzgerald’s son, Patrick, was helping by demonstrating how the press worked.
25 years ago (1988)
Everett Community college was rebuilding its athletic program, which was growing because of more participation, money, public interest and people like Bruce Hansen, Diana Taniguchi and Larry Walker. They were all part-time coaches in the program that included only four sports.
Darrington remained undefeated and laid its claim to the state’s No. 1 Class B-11 ranking with a 35-6 Northwest B League football victory over visiting Orcas. Helping to achieve the victory were Tony Prior, Terry Cloer, Darryl Cloer and Jason Joseph. Darrington would next host Concrete.
