50 years ago (1963)
Kathy Matheson, an Everett High School senior, was awarded a 15-volume set of Compton’s Pictures Encyclopedia when her letter was published in the questionnaire section of the daily feature “Under 20.” She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Matheson.
Melinda Stribling and John Boswell, students at Silver Lake School, were checking out the ring toss which was to be featured at the school’s Fun Fest on Saturday. The fair would have pony rides, fun booths, games, prizes, cotton candy and refreshments.
25 years ago (1988)
Carl Zaretzke of Marysville swept the NASCAR Superstocks races at the Evergreen Speedway before 2,350 fans. After winning the Trophy Dash, the veteran driver went on to win the Main. Bill Bender, of Monroe, set a track record for fast qualifying in the Bomber class.
District 28 Fire Chief Malcom Rose and firefighters April Mann and A.J. Mearns helped clean up hazardous chemicals near Index. Containers filled with chemicals was found in a brushy area north of the Index-Galena Road on the north side of the North Fork Skykomish River.
