SEATTLE — Seattle has become the first city in the nation to use digital signs that tell how long drive times will be on city surface streets.

The first five of the signs were turned on Monday morning. They work by cameras taking pictures of license plates, then calculating the time until the plate is spotted by another camera.

The city plans to have 22 signs and 130 cameras installed by next spring as part of a 19 million “Intelligent Transportation System.”
