Taxpayers have until April 17 to file federal income tax returns, but free help is available now at six Snohomish County locations.
Tuesday is the first day of operation at United Way of Snohomish County tax preparation sites. Volunteers certified by the Internal Revenue Service will provide free assistance for households earning $50,000 or less. Help will be offered until April 14.
In 2011, 2,231 Snohomish County families had returns prepared free of charge through the program, said Neil Parekh, the local United Way spokesman.
No appointment is needed. People should bring: photo identification, a Social Security card or tax identification number for each person on a return; W2 or other income statements; 1099 forms; name, address and tax ID number for a child care provider; student loan and tuition payment records; mortgage interest and property tax statements; a bank account number for direct deposit of refund; and last year’s return if available. If filing jointly, both spouses must be present to file electronically.
At some sites, volunteers will be available to help in Tagalog, Mandarin, Khmer, Spanish, Japanese, Russian, Chichewa and Vietnamese. Sponsors and partners include the Boeing Company, the state Department of Commerce, Bank of America, Moss Adams LLP, Goodwill, the Walmart Foundation and the IRS.
