SNOHOMISH — The Snohomish fire district is asking voters to approve an emergency medical services levy set for the primary ballot in August.
If approved by voters, the levy would draw 50 cents per $1,000 of property value, compared to 35 cents now. The owner of a $300,000 home would pay $150 per year.
The current levy ends Dec. 31, Snohomish Fire Chief Ron Simmons said. The levy made it possible for the district to add paramedic service, he said.
If approved, the proposed levy would last six years. It would bring in an estimated $1.4 million in 2014.
The money would be used for paramedic staffing and training, and medical equipment and supplies, the chief said.
The fire district serves 27,000 people and 60 square miles around and including the city of Snohomish. The district’s 2013 projected revenues are $5.8 million.
The district draws the majority of its revenue from property taxes, with some from ambulance billing.
The chief plans to visit community groups in the coming weeks to discuss the levy and fire district finances. Anyone who would like to request a meeting or more information can call 360-568-2141 during business hours.
The next district commissioners’ meeting is planned for 7 p.m. Monday in the training annex at district headquarters, 1525 Avenue D.
The levy request hasn’t been submitted yet, but typical measures require 60 percent of the vote to pass, county elections manager Garth Fell said.
The primary election is Aug. 6. Military and overseas ballots are mailed June 21. The rest are mailed July 18.
