OLYMPIA — Lawyers who work in Washington state as public defenders or prosecutors may be eligible to get some help repaying their student loans.

Washington’s Higher Education Coordinating Board is accepting applications through Nov. 30 from attorneys or students who make a three-year commitment to work in public-interest law.

The John R. Justice program was passed by Congress in 2008 as a way to encourage more lawyers to pursue careers as public prosecutors and defenders.

For this fiscal year, qualified recipients will be eligible for an award of $8,905, as long as their outstanding student loan debts are not less than that.
