SPOKANE — Voters in Spokane County are approving a ballot measure to expand the Spokane Convention Center and to lure back NCAA men’s basketball tournament games by adding seats to the Spokane Arena.
Measure 1 was passing with 56.2 percent of the vote on Tuesday, 46,176 to 36,014, with about 10,000 ballots remaining to be counted.
The measure approves a 10-year extension of a pair of sales and use taxes to pay for 91,000 square feet of new space in the Spokane Convention Center.
Part of the ballot measure would add 750 seats to the upper bowl of the arena, making it large enough to qualify for future NCAA men’s basketball tournaments. Basketball capacity would rise to 12,500 seats, which is 500 seats above the NCAA minimum.
