POINT ROBERTS — State officials have decided to not to recover a fishing boat that sank off the coast of Point Roberts.
Department of Ecology spokesman Dustin Terpening told the Bellingham Herald that the 50-foot boat is too deep to excavate safely. The boat is resting about 200 feet below the surface.
The boat capsized on Sept. 5, and the Coast Guard was able to rescue all five crew members. The crew reported having some 800 gallons of diesel fuel and some oil on board, and officials say a patchy oil sheen could be seen around the boat a day after it sank.
Terpening says officials do not expect any of the oil to affect shoreline habitat.
