Stennis on way home from Afghan war to Bremerton

BREMERTON — The Navy says the USS Stennis stopped in Singapore Monday for a port visit on its way home to Bremerton.

The aircraft carrier has been operating in and around the Arabian Gulf the past five months, mostly providing air support to allied troops on the ground in Afghanistan.

Planes flew about 1,200 sorties from the Stennis with more than 7,400 flight hours. The Stennis has been replaced by the USS Eisenhower.

The Stennis departed Bremerton in Aug. 27 on a quick turnaround after arriving in March 2012 from a seven-month deployment to wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Kitsap Sun reports the Stennis will likely stop in Hawaii then head to San Diego to drop off its air wing. It’s expected at Naval Base Kitsap-Bremerton in early May.
