Struggle under way over Lane economic agency

EUGENE, Ore. — A power struggle is under way in Lane County over business recruiting.

The Eugene Register-Guard reports (http://bit.ly/XGwu25) that the struggle involves the economic development agency Lane Metro, and its longtime executive director, Jack Roberts, a former state labor commissioner.

The paper says emails show the county wants its economic development officer to take over Lane Metro, which is supported by local governments.

Roberts told the Lane Metro board that the county administrator, Liane Richardson, threatened to withhold $100,000 in contributions unless there’s a change in leadership at the agency.

Richardson tells the paper she wants Lane Metro to improve its communication with economic development officials at local governments. She says she hasn’t made the county’s contribution to the agency contingent on Roberts leaving.
