The sun’s reddish-orange cast, reported Sunday by some people in Snohomish County and other parts of Western Washington, was attributed to smoke from forest fires in British Columbia.

“The way the light is diffusing and reflecting through the smoke particles gives a different tint to the sunlight,” said Dennis D’Amico, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Seattle.

The wind was blowing smoke from the north into Western Washington. The air quality did not appear to be affected, D’Amico said.
