‘A model police officer’ is slain, and mourned, in Tacoma
Associated Press
SEATTLE — Authorities have identified the man police say fatally shot a Tacoma officer and used two children as human shields during an 11-hour standoff.
The Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office said an autopsy of 38-year-old suspect Bruce R. Johnson was scheduled for Friday.
Officials say a sheriff’s sniper killed Johnson early Thursday with one shot after one of the children ran on to the porch and Johnson was exposed. Tacoma officer Reginald “Jake” Gutierrez was fatally shot Wednesday night when he and his female partner went into the house to investigate a domestic violence report.
Gutierrez’s partner returned fire and helped get Johnson’s wife safely out of the house.
Police will escort Gutierrez’s body to a funeral home Friday afternoon.
Tacoma officer’s tragic killing a reminder there’s nothing routine about ‘domestic’ calls
