EVERETT — Police believe a Marysville man wanted in connection with Monday morning’s fatal shooting in south Everett hitchhiked over the Cascades as he tried to flee the area.
Bud Michael Fraser, 21, made it to an Ellensburg truck stop before being placed in handcuffs.
“We’re extremely happy that this guy is in custody,” Everett police Sgt. Robert Goetz said.
Fraser is a suspect in the shooting Monday morning that killed Collin Timothy Cross, 21, of Lake Stevens.
The Snohomish County medical examiner said that Cross died from a gunshot wound to the head. His death was ruled a homicide.
Just before dawn on Monday, Cross had driven a woman to work at Cowgirls Espresso at the corner of SE Everett Mall Way and Third Avenue SE.
Moments later, a single gunshot was reported and officers found Cross slumped dead in a car, Goetz said.
A witness saw Fraser walking away from the crime scene. Detectives learned that Fraser used to date the woman whom Cross had taken to work.
Police believe Fraser drove a yellow Chevrolet Camaro and parked at a McDonald’s near the espresso stand early Monday. The Camaro later was seized as evidence. Officials are investigating whether Fraser was waiting to ambush Cross, Goetz said.
Detectives on Monday released Fraser’s photo as they scoured the area to try to bring him in for questioning.
A tip Tuesday led detectives in Everett to call police in Ellensburg to look for Fraser. He was arrested without incident, Goetz said.
“It’s obvious he was making attempt to flee the area,” he said. “Now, we can continue on with our investigation to determine the motive.”
Detectives haven’t released the relationship Cross shared with the barista.
Cross grew up in the area and attended Lake Stevens schools through his freshman year in high school, officials said.
After Fraser’s arrest Tuesday, Everett detectives drove to Ellensburg to take him into custody, Goetz said.
Fraser was expected to be booked into the Snohomish County Jail for investigation of first-degree murder. He is scheduled to make his first court appearance today.
