Suspect in rampage shootings is booked into jail

MARYSVILLE — The Granite Falls man accused of shooting at businesses, police stations and other targets Wednesday night has been released from the hospital and booked into the Snohomish County Jail.

Hans Hansen, 43, was booked on Saturday afternoon with multiple charges of first-degree assault with a weapon and drive-by shooting.

Hansen is accused of firing gunshots from a white extended-cab pickup truck in Granite Falls, Lake Stevens and Marysville. Near the end of the rampage, two Marysville police officers fired shots at Hansen. He eventually surrendered and was taken to a local hospital with undisclosed injuries.

Marysville police Sgt. James Maples was also injured. The 19-year department veteran was released from Everett’s Providence Regional Medical Center.

The two Marysville police officers who fired their weapons during the incident were placed on administrative leave, as required by department policy. Their names have not been released.

The rampage likely started around 9:15 p.m. on Wednesday with shots being fired into two Mountain Loop Highway businesses, the Granite Falls Police Department, and an unmanned patrol vehicle.

About 30 minutes later, some two dozen shots were fired at the Lake Stevens Police Department. Bullets hit two police cars, an animal control vehicle and the city’s electronic reader board.

No one was inside the police station at the time.

At about 10:10 p.m., there were several reports of shots being fired in three different parts of Marysville within minutes of each other.

The Snohomish County Multiple Agency Response Team, a group of specially trained detectives from several departments who examine situations in which police use deadly force, is investigating the shootings.

It is expected to be a long and complex investigation with multiple crime scenes and numerous shots fired.
