SITKA, Alaska — A teenager jogging on a Sitka trail during a ferry layover was bitten by a grizzly bear.
KCAW reported that 18-year-old Vancouver, B.C., resident Nicola Rammell chanced upon a sow and her cub on the Mosquito Cove trail Wednesday. She turned to run, but fell off the trail and down a hill. Alaska Fish and Game biologist Phil Mooney says the bear bit her on the buttocks.
The girl screamed and the bear left to rejoin her cub. But Mooney said Rammell stood up and waved at the bear, which then charged at her again. But it was only a bluff charge. The two bears then left the area.
Alaska State Troopers said Rammell’s injuries were minor, and she was treated and released. The trail and campground are closed.
