STANWOOD — A former Little League official could face criminal charges after money turned up missing from the youth baseball association’s accounts.
The Stanwood Police Department began investigating the finances of the Stanwood-Camano Little League in October after new leaders of the organization shared concerns of possible wrongdoing.
The investigation found that more than $42,000 was missing, some of which has since been returned, Stanwood police Chief Rick Hawkins said.
The suspect hasn’t been arrested or charged.
“This person no longer has any access to the accounts,” Hawkins said.
Snohomish County prosecutors could be handed the investigation early next week. It will be their decision whether charges are warranted.
Little League leaders released a statement earlier this week saying the allegations involve the organization’s former treasurer.
In the press release, they said new safeguards have been put in place to prevent future thefts.
“We trust our law enforcement officers to conduct a thorough investigation, and with the support of Little League International, we will continue to cooperate with the criminal investigation in any way we can,” league officials wrote.
Hawkins said he hopes the actions of one person don’t affect the perceptions people have of an entire volunteer organization.
“This is a good community and this is hard on them,” he said.
