GEORGE — A Grant County sheriff’s spokesman says fire crews have extinguished a blaze that started when someone used a torch to open a metal container holding about 800 pounds of dry fertilizer.

Spokesman Kyle Foreman said the fire Thursday afternoon sent up a plume of smoke.

Nearby roads were briefly closed as firefighters responded.

Foreman said later there was no public health risk.
