Tree sitter trying to block Bainbridge mall comes down

BAINBRIDGE ISLAND — A 19-year-old woman who spent a day and a half perched 70 feet up a tree in an effort to stop developers from cutting trees for a mall on Bainbridge Island, Washington, has come down.

Chiara D’Angelo climbed up the tree early Monday and descended Tuesday evening.

KING-TV reports the city of Bainbridge Island says the young woman won’t be arrested for trespassing.

D’Angelo is a 2013 Bainbridge High School graduate studying environmental justice at Western Washington University.

The developer plans to cut about 800 trees for an 8-acre shopping center.

Visconsi Companies said Tuesday it respects the young woman’s right to voice her opinions.

In a statement, Visconsi says it is developing commercially zoned property after “an extensive and transparent public review process.”
