EVERETT — Two local nonprofit organizations are warning of a fundraising scam in which children have been sent to local homes to ask for donations.

The children falsely claim to be from Housing Hope, an affordable-housing agency, and the Interfaith Association of Northwest Washington, a faith-based organization providing emergency shelter for homeless families. These children are not affiliated with the agencies, and neither group solicits donations door-to-door.

The children have been sent to random houses in Snohomish County asking for money to go to summer camp, the agencies said in a release. The children will ask residents to give them a cash donation or write a check to a specific person, not to the agencies that they claim to be representing. People who appear to be the children’s parents are waiting on the sidewalk, usually accompanied by additional adults and children.

The agencies are asking people to encounter this kind of activity to local law enforcement and to the agency they claim to represent.
