EVERETT – The USS Abraham Lincoln took off this morning for what may be one of its last deployments from Everett.
The giant nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, along with missile destroyers USS Momsen and USS Shoup, left for a routine six-month deployment, said Kristin Ching, a U.S. Navy spokeswoman. The USS Lincoln Strike Group will focus on maritime security operations during its time at sea.
The Lincoln is scheduled to sail to Norfolk, Va., in 2011 to refuel its two nuclear reactors. The three-year refueling process is set to begin in 2013. The U.S. Navy has not decided whether the ship will return to its homeport in Everett.
The Lincoln left Naval Station Everett at 10 a.m. The Momsen and the Shoup left around 11 a.m.
