DARRINGTON — When custodians and maintenance workers arrived at Darrington Elementary School on Monday morning, they found shattered glass, flooded floors, discharged fire extinguishers and graffiti.
Vandals broke in over the weekend and caused extensive damage at the town’s elementary and some damage at the high school.
“Right now, it looks like we’ll be able to get everything back in place before the school year starts,” said McKenzie Boyd, business manager for the district.
Snohomish County Sheriff’s deputies are investigating. Two girls, ages 13 and 14, and one boy, 10, have been identified as suspects, sheriff’s spokeswoman Shari Ireton said. The 13-year-old was arrested and booked into Denney Juvenile Justice Center. The other two were released to family.
It appears the suspects were in the school for several hours, Ireton said.
Professional cleaners are being hired by the district. Staff have been asked not to enter the buildings until further notice.
“We’ve never seen anything like this before,” Boyd said.
