Vehicular homicide under investigation after Whidbey crash kills three

LANGLEY — Three young men were killed early Saturday morning when a car driven by an 18-year-old woman from Langley struck a tree and burst into flames.

The driver, identified by the Washington State Patrol as Kaylea Souza, was pulled from the car by witnesses and taken to Whidbey General Hospital in Coupeville. Her injuries were fairly minor, Washington State Patrol trooper Keith Leary said.

After Souza was released from the hospital Saturday morning, she was arrested for investigation of vehicular homicide and later booked into the Island County jail, Leary said.

The accident occurred just after midnight on Wilkinson Road near Meandor Lane south of Langley.

Souza’s car was southbound on Wilkinson when it veered off the roadway to the right, struck a tree and was soon engulfed in flames, according to a State Patrol report.

Two of the young men killed in the crash were from Whidbey Island. One, 22, was from Freeland and the other, 20, was from Langley.

The third person killed in the accident was a 19-year old from Palmdale, Calif.

The names of the three men who died in the accident were not released as of Saturday evening.
