ARLINGTON — Mayor Barbara Tolbert’s Volunteer Award was presented posthumously to Jim Barron at the June 5 City Council Meeting. Barron’s son Rich Barron received the award on his father’s behalf.
Jim Barron was a past commander of the American Legion Post 76 and of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1561; he was a Korean War veteran. He was well known in Arlington for coordinating the annual Memorial Day and Veterans Day parades through the American Legion. Every year, he worked with the Boy Scouts to install the U.S. flags at the cemetery for Memorial Day and coordinated official flag retirement ceremonies.
He served at northbound and southbound I-5 rest stops and coordinated the coffee program for more than ten years. He and his friend, Alan Simmons, went to various retirement facilities during the holidays to ensure that our poor and elderly had visitors. He also organized magazine drives for the VA hospital in Seattle.
