If you’re looking for federal money to fix flood-damaged property, it’s a wait-and-see proposition.
After extensive flooding in our region in early 2009, President Barack Obama declared Snohomish County and several other counties disaster areas in late January of that year. That action was the green light for property owners to register with the Federal Emergency Management Agency. By mid-February of 2009, Snohomish County had recorded about $18 million in public and private property damage from flooding that year.
As flooding continues, if the county is declared a disaster area, information is available at 800-621-FEMA (3362) or at www.disasterassistance.gov.
If federal disaster assistance becomes available, applicants need: Social Security number, current and pre-disaster address, phone number for future contact, insurance information, annual household income, bank account and routing numbers for direct deposit, and a description of losses.
