SEATTL — Washington mountaineer Dan Mazur of Lakebay says he has a heavy heart after hearing of the death in Australia of fellow climber Lincoln Hall. He died of cancer Wednesday at the age of 56.
In 2006 Mazur and a Sherpa were guiding two clients near the summit of Everest when they came across Hall, who had been left for dead the day before. They rescued Hall, giving up their own chance to summit.
Mazur said in an email Thursday to The Associated Press he’ll be thinking of Hall this spring in his next expedition on Everest and will say a prayer when he reaches the spot at 28,200 feet where he first met Hall.
In Hall’s memory, Mazur says he wants to build a school in remote Nepal.
