Some south Snohomish County residents were advised to boil their tap water after a water main broke early Tuesday.
The Cross Valley Water District repaired the water line, but customers in the affected area were advised to boil tap water used for drinking and cooking, state Department of Health communications spokesman Tim Church said in a press release.
According to the press release, about 175 households and small businesses south of Highway 522 along W. Bostian Road in the Maltby area were affected.
The utility was testing the water for harmful bacteria Tuesday, Church said.
When water outages occur, certain bacteria may contaminate water systems, posing a health risk to young children and people with weakened immune systems, he said.
Until the water is determined to be safe to drink, affected customers should boil all water intended for consumption for at least one minute.
