COUPEVILLE — An 82-year-old man who escaped from a home destroyed in a massive landslide on Washington’s Whidbey Island says he moved fast because he “wasn’t quite ready” to die.
John Etheridge told KOMO-TV he awoke to a loud boom about 3 a.m. Wednesday.
He says he could feel the home sliding off its foundation. He threw on some sweat pants and shoes, grabbed his keys and kicked open a balky back door.
Etheridge jumped in his truck, threw it in reverse and headed down the street leading out, only to find the landslide had taken out the two-lane road. That’s when he called 911 and was rescued unharmed.
Thirty-five homes were initially evacuated after the slide 50 miles north of Seattle. In addition to the one home destroyed, four remained under evacuation orders Friday. More than a dozen homes remained inaccessible.
