City officials in Alamogordo, N.M., have given a Canadian movie crew permission to search an old landfill for Atari video games reportedly dumped there in the 1980s — including a game based on the movie “E.T.” that was so bad it helped sink the company (Page A8).

The last time pop culture-obsessed nerds got this excited about garbage was when a couple of Trekkers happened to see Leonard Nimoy lugging his trash can to the curb outside his home in Los Angeles.

Potent weapon against malaria: Scientists have found that mosquitoes infected with malaria are attracted to human odors from dirty socks, which may help them create traps that target only disease-carrying skeeters.

In the meantime, if you’re traveling to tropical places anytime soon, you might want to leave the tube socks — and the 15-year-old with sketchy personal hygiene — at home.
