I was appalled to read, in Sunday’s Herald that the U.S. had declared a flight of two B-52 bombers over international water, claimed by China, to be inadvertent. (Dec. 20 article, “Bombers didn’t intend to fly over island, U.S. says.”) We have never recognized China’s claim to these various areas of open water. Why do we now do so? We should have said “It’s international water and we’ll fly over it if we want to.” This back-handed apology does not help our allies’ confidence in the U.S.
