Late last summer Waste Management went on strike after failing to agree with their drivers over a contract. During the strike, they failed to service many of the residents of Everett, my neighborhood included.
When I received the billing for the period after the strike, I expected to see a credit, or no charge for the service they failed to provide. Alas, it was not to be.
Therefore I divided the bill by the number of days they should have picked up the garbage, and deducted that amount ($7.20) from the check I sent them, along with a note explaining the calculation and why.
Fast forward to this past week, now I get a bill, with the $7.20 listed as a “past due” amount. I called Waste Management for clarification.
I was told that even though I hauled my own, and a neighbor’s trash to the transfer station during the missed service day, I would not be receiving any credit on the bill; the person I talked to was rude and argumentative, and threatened to send me to collections!
The practice of putting out additional bags, etc., for the next collection cycle isn’t a good option; the squirrels, crows and other critters shred the bags and strew the garbage over the street, Waste Management does not pick it up, not even spills they create during normal operations.
The residential customers of both Seattle and Federal Way received $10 credits on their bills, why didn’t we?
I urge all the citizens affected by this problem to contact the Washington State Utilities and Transportation Commission and file a complaint about this businesses practices.
