It now appears in the infinite wisdom of Costco that we now have operated under the demise of the state-run liquor stores for several months. In my travels across the state, I make it a point to ask the clerks of the big box stores how many bottles have crossed the checkout line and are usually given answers reflecting very few.
It is now time to either bring back the state stores to sell and control the liquor and soon to be marijuana products or mandate that the Costco’s and big box outlets that wanted this opportunity be required to place those items on their respective shelves. The benefits to this in my opinion are enormous, given the typical stereotype of individuals within this drug market would now have a position with a solid income and benefits. The bakery departments could then compete with other stores for the mellowest or hottest brownies in the communities they serve. A frustrated mother with an unruly 2 year old could swing by the bakery for a sample to calm the child. The elderly lady with a sample tray and enclosed smoking booth on aisle two would have the undivided attention of patrons for hours without end. In addition, if one of the box stores passed out token sample at the front door with the Cheetos in the back just think of the added sales. Endless opportunities.
As ALEC seems to be the voice of the conservative legislative process, I urge them to get to work on this important change in our distribution network.
