A candidate’s choice of political party tells something about them. Nate Nehring (County Council Position 1) has chosen the Republican Party and it has chosen him. Presumably he favors its policies. Let’s examine them.
First and foremost this is the party of “Government is not the solution.” The Republican Party doesn’t want government to be the solution. They work hard to make sure that never happens. It’s anathema to them. In their view the tender mercies of “the market” will solve everything. Every man for himself and the devil take the hindmost is their philosophy. Their version of a social safety net can be seen under freeway overpasses, at the bottom of off ramps and in privatized jails.
With their “right to work (for squat)” laws and their relentless efforts to repeal the estate tax, they strive to break unions and facilitate the development of economic dynasties. They reflexively oppose any policy that benefits the poor or protects the environment if it reduces profits. They support eliminating or privatizing Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security. Every tax policy they support disproportionately benefits the ultra-wealthy.
I’m sure Nate is a nice enough young fellow. But he’s being groomed to spend the next 40 years promoting the positions of the Republican Party as outlined above. If that sounds good to you, vote for Nate. If not, give your vote to a candidate that has compassion and experience and would actually try to make government work for you. That candidate is Ray Miller.
