While I understand the need for a safe building for courthouse operations, it is absolutely unacceptable that the elected officials in this county are so narrow visioned and lacking in judgment. (Article, “Tax hike likely needed to pay for new courthouse.”) These elected officials, including the judges, executive and council members, are all slapping each other on the backs and shaking hands in a good-old-boy demeanor all the while sticking it to the hard-working taxpayers of this county.
What they are doing is criminal. Why aren’t more creative alternatives being considered such as night court? King County must hold a night court for just these reasons, as well as locate their court services outside of the city center. With 15 judges and half of them working nights, that would mean the need for only eight courtrooms instead of 20. I am shocked that these officials have not lived within the means of the taxpayer wallet. The citizens of this great county must live within our means, now set an example for us.
The last money for a courthouse and jail was for the juvenile system which even now sits three-quarters empty. It was built to house over 100 kids and now seldom holds more than 25, but is fully staffed to house 50 or more. It’s time for these politicians to be fiscally responsible.
