Dolls and monsters

Do they make a Menopause Barbie? The Barbie doll, a household name for 54 years, may have met her match in the form of Monster High dolls, edgy, big-eyed dolls fashioned after Dracula, Frankenstein and other cool ghouls. Barbie sales are slipping and the Monster High dolls are increasingly popular.

It’s been a tough year for Barbie: Her Dream House is still underwater, her sister, Skipper, has gone goth and Barbie’s pretty certain that was Draculaura she saw riding with Ken in his Barbie Corvette.

Fischer used a similar gambit against Spassky in ‘72: Bellevue police arrested an armed man after an eight-hour standoff during which tear gas and flash-bang grenades were used to subdue him. The standoff began following an alleged assault against a neighbor during a game of chess.

The man finally signaled his surrender by laying his king on its side.

She’s got a ticket to ride: Former Beatle Paul McCartney is scheduled to perform for a crowd of 45,000 people tonight at Safeco Field, the first major concert at the home of the Seattle Mariners.

Looking for some offensive help, the Mariners, who return for a home stand on Monday, are expected to place Yoko Ono on waivers and call up Ringo from AA Liverpool.
