Why should Community Transit be allowed to raise their fares in February when they won’t even enforce the fare payment that they have now? They lose thousands of dollars every week from people who don’t pay a fare when they board the bus and they do not allow the driver to deny entry to the bus. In fact it has been known by the drivers that if they refuse a person to ride a bus without paying a fare they can be terminated for denying a person a ride even though it is a violation of RCW 9A56.050 “third-degree theft” and as well as RCW 36.57A.230 “$124 fine for nonpayment of fare.”
So instead of raising the fare to make up for all the deadbeats who don’t pay anything to ride the bus, maybe they should allow the drivers to enforce the current fare laws instead of blatantly condoning the violation of Washington state law over fare payment. But of course with a fare increase that also gives them the ability to give their management a nice bonus for not doing their job like they should be doing like serving the “paying” public.
