I am extremely pleased to write in support of Snohomish County Music Project’s efforts to bring music programs to Snohomish County schools. The program has helped launch two music initiatives in the Marysville School District that are making a difference at a time when several years of budget cuts have greatly curtailed our ability to expand arts programs. Our district is a firm believer in the benefits that the arts, particularly music, play in the life of our students. Music not only reinforces the learning in core academic subjects, it also keeps students engaged in schools.
The SCMP’s first initiative in our district, the Link-Up Project, connecting our students with recorder instruction as well as an opportunity witness a symphony, greatly enlivened our elementary music program. Link-Up and SCMP brought together our elementary music teachers, a dedicated group, for professional development in a recorder curriculum. (Feb. 19 article, “Music to teachers’ ears.”) The project enhanced the collegiality and esprit de corps of the music teachers, who were enthused to collaborate with SCMP to bring these opportunities to 1,300 district students.
But the SCMP was not done assisting our district. Through the Salish Music Club, the SCMP provided an after-school opportunity for upper elementary students to get their first experience with strings and other instruments. A true partnership project with the District and our school’s PTSA’s, parents responded quickly and enthusiastically for lessons that bring together our students with community music professionals.
I have been highly impressed with the spirit of partnership and advocacy in action of the Snohomish County Music Project. I hope that through partnerships and obtaining additional funding, SCMP can engage even more local students in the enriching experiences that have already been provided.
