I recently read a SeattleMet.com regarding local area restaurants and their seasonal steelhead on the menu — “How a Steelhead Trout Goes from the Hoh River to the Entree Menu.” These fish are caught by gillnets which are kill nets and do not discriminate between wild and hatchery. I can not believe that someone would glorify the killing of wild steelhead like this and these local restaurants contribute to the problem buy buying the fish.
We as consumers should stand up and say no more! Boycott these restaurants. As a retired commercial fisherman, now I catch them one at a time with a pole, I have seen the effects of the Bolt Decision, mainly the pressure of native gillnetting in the rivers, with the decline in our native fish stocks. Can you tell me what fish the Quinault tribe is targeting this time of year fishing five days a week on the Chehalis River? Sunday at noon through Friday at noon every week until mid April. This is a “no brainer” — get the nets out of the rivers or these wild fish are doomed.
